Aim/ Objectivo



The University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES) will hold its first international conference on Australian Studies, 14-15 February 2011. The aim of the symposium is the exploration and discussion of major cultural and literary themes, as well as scholarship from Portugal and abroad, that contribute to the framing and defining of contemporary Australian identity.

How to get there:
Unless you are coming from other directions other than Lisbon's centre, the best way to reach the Faculty of Letters is by underground train, taking the Yellow Line and  leaving at Cidade Universitária station. 

At the Faculty of Letters ask for Room 5.2. ( Sala 5.2where the Conference is hosted.

Australian Cinema/ Cinema Australiano



During the week of the conference (15th-18th of February), the Portuguese Cinemateque/ Museum of the Cinema (Cinemateca Portuguesa/ Museum of the Cinema) will host a mini-festival dedicated to Australian Cinema.                                                                                                                                                               


This showing with 35 mm film copies is only possible with the invaluable help of the Cinemateca Portuguesa.

Aboriginal Art Exhibition/ Exposição de Arte Aborígene - 14 to 25 February, 2011


An exhibition on Australian Aboriginal art will held at Instituto Camões, Avenida da Liberdade, 270, in Lisbon, from 14 to 25 February.

The exhibition features works of art from the Australian Embassy's collection, by two contemporary indigenous artists, Dennis Nona and Alick Tipoti, along with works by other artists. Australian Aboriginal art is part of a rich cultural heritage and seeks its inspiration from traditional myths, stories, spirits, symbols and also from Australian fauna and flora.

A short film featuring the official apology to Australia's Indigenous Peoples is included in the event.

A number of books and maps of Australia from the Faculty of Letters' Library will also be on display.
